IELTS General Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing)

A friend from another country is moving to your city for work. He/she has asked you for advice about living in your city.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter

  • suggest an interesting part of the city to live in
  • describe the public transport in your city
  • say how your friend can meet new people there

Here's a sample answer

Dear Sophia,

I'm really excited to hear the news that you're relocating to Gurgaon and would be staying here for a while. The places which have most of the office premises are around Ambience Mall and Cyber Hub, which happen to be the party hubs as well, and there are a number of societies where you can rent an apartment at a reasonable price. In case you're willing to reside in a quieter area, then you can search residential apartments in Manesar which is about 10kms from the central Gurgaon but is connected with a superhighway with excellent transport facilities.

As far as public transport is concerned, there are multiple options to choose from. The state-run Metro Services are at par with Tubes of the UK and they are extremely convenient during rush hours. Also, Uber is operational here too so you can use your existing account to rent a cab anytime you wish since they operate 24hrs a day and maintain good standards. Apart from these, the city also has local buses and e-rickshaws which you can use to move from one area to another without having to spend a fortune on cabs.

I know you're a party animal and like to socialize a lot, well, Gurgaon's the place you can ask for. The Cyber Hub has a range of restaurants that play live music, has world-class cafes and pubs which are really popular amongst the young crowd who wish to drink and dance not only during the weekends but all days of the week. You can meet new people and make friends with them since the majority of the pupil are working professionals and are extremely nice to converse with, and are very helpful too. I'm sure you can find a soulmate there since you've not managed to get one for the last 3 years in Montreal.

Hoping to see you soon.

With love,
Gurpreet Singh
